About Senator David Durenberger

Dave Durenberger represented Minnesota in the United States Senate for three terms after being elected in Nov 1978 to the unexpired term of Sen Hubert Humphrey which his wife Muriel had been appointed to fill on his death in Jan. 1978. He is the recent author, along with Lori Sturdevant, of When Republicans Were Progressive, a history of the successful contributions of Republican leaders in Minnesota from 1938 until 1998.

Dave was born, raised and educated on the campus of St. John’s Abbey and University, served in the U.S. Army Reserve as the first officer graduated from the school’s Army ROTC program in 1955, and received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota in 1959. He practiced law with Harold LeVander in South St. Paul and served as Executive Secretary to Governor LeVander from 1966 to 1970. Thereafter Dave served as Director of Legal and Community Affairs at H B Fuller Co in St. Paul until his election to the Senate.

Upon retirement from the Senate in 1995 he joined the faculty of the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas where he chaired its National institute of Health Policy for 20 years. Dave and his wife Susan B. Foote are parents of six children and 14 grandchildren. Susan is the author last year of Crusade for Forgotten Souls the story of Minnesota’s historic efforts to reform its asylum system as a national model of systemic mental health reform.

The Senator’s book, besides being a unique history of the Republican Party of Minnesota, is a rare insight into how the faith journey of a U.S.Senator can influence both personal and international relations; in unexpected ways and by unorthodox means.
